Abstract
The now famous movie Backrooms is just an example of what I suggest is a deepening fear in today’s society. Not only is this phenomenon explicit in the visual and narrative premise of the movie, but it also works as a catalyst of or metaphor for much more uncanniness related to its motive: the never-ending liminal space of collective consciousness, which has manifested itself into an uncanny and withering yellow colored office complex holds a lot more to unpack than just “corporate dystopia”. To me it seems emblematic for a pervasive dissonance which must be characteristic for a society knowingly in alteration but without any promising vision. Thus, the question this article is trying to investigate firstly is what intricate fear is figuratively represented in these Backrooms and secondly what broader conclusions on societal fear and self-perception are transmitted in this exact movie or any aligned concept as well?
